Jakarta's Monas - task 1

One of Jakarta’s historical site is Monumen Nasional or Monas. Monas was built during the Soekarno’s rezime in 1959. The construction took years to finish and finally completed during Soeharto’s rezime in 1975. It was designed by Soedarsono and Frederich Silaban as the architects and constructed under the supervision of Ir. Rooseno. Basically, the monument was built to commemorate the struggles of our country for its independence. Also it was meant to preserve patriotisms among the people.

Monas is 137 metres high with a very unique design. The obelisk which dilates downwards the square-shaped base was inspired by the Lingga-Yoni, a symbol of fertility in ancient Hindu-Javanese belief. At its top would be a sort of flaming torch in enormous size made of 14.5 tons of bronze which is covered by pure gold up to 35 kilograms as a symbol of the success the Indonesians seized in declaring their independence.
