Glass Making - Task 3

Glass is an innovation that now has been a vital entity in our life. The glass making itself consists of some steps. Here are the steps that must be followed to make glass.

The compound that is used in glass making consists of sand as the main component, added with soda ash, limestone, and feldspar. Firstly, we have to make sure that the compound we are using is already in powder form. Secondly, we put all the compound into a furnace to be mixed and melted at temperature of 1700oC.

The third step is to mold the molten compound. From the furnace, the compound is distributed through two different channels to reach two different ends. The first one is ended at a temporary storage to temporary keep the molten compound for the later plate glass making, and the second one is ended at a removable mold to make bottle glass. These two ends use different glass making method. While plate glass making is simply done by pressing the mold with an automatic rolling pin to make it flat and thin, bottle glass making uses a merely more complicated method. Once the removable mold is filled with the glass compound, we have to blow it until we have the certain shape and size, and reheat the half-done bottle glass until it is hard and solid.

After that, we already can have some additional processes, such as coloring, polishing, and coating done to the bottle and plate glass we have. Finally, now the plate and bottle glass are officially ready to be marketed.
